a little about me...

Hi. My name is Christopher Smith. I have held positions in the trumpet sections of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, The Montreal Symphony Orchestra, The Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the Des Moines Metro Opera Company. In all of these groups, I have had the opportunity to play at both ends of the trumpet section... hence Last Chair Trumpet.

I attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI where I studied with Scott Thornburg and received a Bachelor of Music degree. I then went on the Eastman School of Music where I studied for a year with James Thompson.

In the summer of 2000 I joined the Trumpet/Cornet section of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band in Washington, DC. For eight years I performed regularly with the band at The White House, in and around the Washington, D.C. area and on national tours.

In January of 2008 I won the 4th/Utility Trumpet position with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (OSM). www.osm.ca

In 2010 I won the 2nd Trumpet position with the Des Moines Metro Opera Company where I played for one summer.

In January of 2011 I won the 3rd/Assistant Principal Trumpet position with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra where I played for one season.

Currently, I am playing the 4th/Utility Trumpet position with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

I have several ideas for this blog. I am hoping to post my thoughts about playing trumpet professionally, performing in the orchestra setting, techniques for practicing and auditioning, and ideas on music in general. In addition, I am hoping to include some audio and video recordings.

Thanks for visiting my blog! I hope you'll find something interesting here along the way and will stop back often.
